Case Zero: The Prussian Blue Forgery

Yanaka, Tokyo. Aigendō, an antique shop that has stood since the Meiji era. While its owner is in the hospital, his seventeen-year-old granddaughter, Mina, runs the small shop alone. A quiet place where time seems to have stood still. But the night the black cat, Kuro, begins to speak, that stillness slowly starts to change. One day, an elderly woman arrives with an old hand-painted ukiyo-e painting of a black cat beneath the moon. She isn't interested in what the painting is worth. She wants to know what her late husband's words really meant. The blue in the painting is beautiful. Perhaps too beautiful.

This blue shouldn't exist in 1760s Japan.

How You Investigate

Examine each object and look for what does not belong. The paper. The seal. The blue pigment. Each fact you find becomes an Evidence Card and is recorded in your casebook. When the cards are ready, compare two facts that cannot both be true. Kuro finds the physical facts objects leave behind. Mina reads the reasons people chose to hide them. When the two come together, the full shape of the case begins to emerge.

When you finish a case, your investigation is described in a single word: Expert, Apprentice, or Novice. It is not a score. It is a record of the path your reasoning took.
